X–ray and Optical Filaments in M87
نویسندگان
چکیده
We compare a very deep X–ray image of M87, at the center of the Virgo Cluster, to high-quality optical images of the low excitation emission-line gas in the same region. There are striking coincidences of detail between the two. We explore the possiblity that this represents a thermal interaction between hot gas at 10 K and warm gas at 10 K. We find two temperatures are present in the X–ray gas, with the lower more prevelant in the vicinity of the optical filaments. Electron conduction from the hot phase to the cooler one provides a quantitatively acceptable energy source for the optical filaments, and we show additionally that it can do so for the brightest X–ray cluster, Perseus. If operative, conduction in the presence of gas-rich galaxy mergers, may explain the presence of “cool cores” in clusters of galaxies. Month-timescale Optical Variability in the M87 Jet
A previously inconspicuous knot in the M87 jet has undergone a dramatic outburst and now exceeds the nucleus in optical and X-ray luminosity. Monitoring of M87 with the Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra X-ray Observatory during 2002-2003, has found month-timescale optical variability in both the nucleus and HST-1, a knot in the jet 0.82 from the nucleus. We discuss the behavior of the variabil...
متن کاملThe M87 Jet - J.A. Biretta
We review the current observational status of the M87 jet at radio, optical, and X-ray frequencies. Special attention is paid to the radio morphology, the radio-to-X-ray spectrum, measurement of proper motions, and optical evidence for a counter-jet. The problem of jet confinement is discussed, as well as models for the radio-to-X-ray spectrum and the related problem of particle lifetimes. Fina...
متن کاملTRANSITIVE X-RAY SPECTRUM AND PeV GAMMA-RAY CUTOFF IN THE M87 JET: ELECTRON ”PEVATRON”
We propose a modified version of the X-ray spectral index and an intrinsic cutoff frequency of inverse Compton radiation from the brightest knot of the M87 jet, in conjunction with an application of the new conceptions of injection and diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) of electrons in magnetized filamentary plasma, to the specified source. The drop of the X-ray flux density in a transitive fre...
متن کاملA Modified Synchrotron Model for Knots in the M87 Jet
For explaining the broadband spectral shape of knots in the M87 jet from radio through optical to X-ray, we propose a modified synchrotron model that considers the integrated effect of particle injection from different acceleration sources in the thin acceleration region. This results in two break frequencies at two sides of which the spectral index of knots in the M87 jet changes. We discuss t...
متن کاملA first joint M87 campaign in 2008 from radio to TeV gamma-rays
M87, the central galaxy of the Virgo Cluster, is the first radio galaxy detected in the TeV regime. The structure of its jet, which is not pointing toward the line of sight, is spatially resolved in X-ray (by Chandra), in optical and in radio observations. Time correlation between the TeV flux and emission at other wavelengths provides a unique opportunity to localize the very high energy gamma...
